Need student loan to get overdraft?

Options
My question is as the title suggests

im from England but go to a university in Dublin and so wasn't allowed a student loan :(

is it possible for me to open an English account that has an overdraft despite me not having a student loan?

and also, can you advise me on which one may be best.....

cheers

  • Get a letter from the university saying you're attending there is probably the best bet.

I'm sure my bank didn't require me to take a student loan in order to get an overdraft - I just needed proof that I was studying (basically the university's acceptance letter).

You may well, however, have problems opening a UK Bank Account for a foreign course in Ireland. HSBC requires that you are taking a "qualifying full-time undergraduate course of two years or more at a UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man university/college" - which sounds like you won't qualify. I imagine that other banks might have similar conditions. Could you possibly get an overdraft from an Irish bank?

Also, a lot of banks have in their T&C that you must pay in your student loan to be eligable for the overdraft, so even though they may grant you one when opening the account, they could take it off you and demand immediate repayment if you do not pay your loan into the account.

    Best check the T&C.

i'd say most, if not all student accounts require your loan to be paid in. However, they dont really check this, as long as you have some money going in from time to time. so just have two accounts and switch a few hundred quid between each.

like pinkpig says, not sure they'd let u open account when your going to dublin. guess it would have to be an irish account.
What's it going to be, eh?

You don't need to have a student loan to get an overdraft (or even a student account). What you do need however, is a semi-regular income paid into said account.
  • Hello.
I study in England, dont have a student loan but do have a student account with Lloyds. Also I opened it part way through my course, all they wanted to see was my letter of acceptance from UCAS.
  • Cheers for all the help people, i opened up a nationwide account upon starting my course (which was 2 and half years ago) and they let me have an overdraft with no income or anything going into it....but thats run out now :)

i tried with yorkshire bank earlier today but they refused as i have no income going into my account....still wondering which bank etc would require no income into the account but guess ill just have to go to as many banks as possible.

    cheers
