non-NTL phones on Virgin land line?

I read somewhere ages ago that only NTL phones should be used on Virgin land lines. Does anyone know if this is true? Does anyone use BT phones, for example, without any problems on Virgin?

I've tried to phone Virgin but went through 15 non-relevant options and gave up!

Never heard that one before.

I used to be on Virgin some years ago (now live outside their coverage) and used corded BT, cordless Philips and cordless Panasonic handsets without a problem.

The days when they could get away with something like that are long gone.

Just buy the phone you want and plug it in.

you can use an standard phone on a VM line
also for queries like that its easier to use the VM support forums

As long as the phone has the green dot or CE mark then it'll work.Certain old style phones with built in answer machines that draw the power off the phoneline did cause us problems.

The Green Dot/Red Triangle has been long consigned to the dustbin, as the Approvals process was abandoned years ago following the Break up of the industry. The reason why there was issues, concerned the delivery of Caller Display, - BT sent the data before the first ring, some cable networks sent the data between the first and second rings, so BT phones did not always present the number, but the phone itself worked. 20 Years on, the Caller Display chips are system agnostic, and will resolve any number whenever it is sent, although much of NTLs legacy network used Ericsson AXE10 switches (System Y on BT) there were no issues. Telewest required a software update, but this was done years ago, so there are now no issues - any UK phone will work, BUT - some networks have been configured not to allow pulse dialling, it MUST be DTMF (Tone) dialling.
