Thank you everyone for the replies. :)

Now I feel slightly evolutionarily advanced but at the same time unwise.:rotfl:

That's quite correct - we are evolving out of wisdom teeth. They are the most commonly absent teeth. Many people don't have any at all. It is quite common to have one or more missing.

If you do have them, the usual age for them to come through is between 18 and 25, but it can be later (85 was the oldest patient I've seen one come through in!)

If you have them and they don't come through, it might be because they are impacted. That means they have got caught against the tooth in front in some way.

That is not always bad. Impacted wisdom teeth can sit quite happily down in the bone all your life with no trouble, but occasionally they do cause trouble, and need removing. They're the ones you hear about!

It's not worth taking x-rays to look for your wisdom teeth if they're not causing any trouble. There's no point knowing if they're there or not, as there's no need to take them out if they're symptomless.

So - in short - chill out!

There's no problem if they're not there and nothing's hurting!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I've only got 3 :-) 75% wise does me just fine n
  • I'm 33 and didn't start getting mine until 30. They're still partially erupted.

  • I'm 33, too. My first wisdom tooth started coming through last year, although only half of it has bothered. The rest are lurking under the gums.

  • I don't have any wisdom teeth - they just don't exist.

It's an evolutionary advance apparently. We don't need them, so some people don't get them at all (and that proportion will continue to increase until it's rare to get them at all).

They would only been bred out of the population if the gene in some way discourages or prevents breeding.

  • My OH started growing his first at 26, no sign of the other 3 yet. I on the other hand had all 4 of mine (fully grown) extracted when I was 21!
