Is anyone using any form of oild for their dog?
I am looking at this one:
http://www.zooplus.co.uk/feedback/shop/dogs/dog_health/skin_coat_supplements/51017
Can anyoen recommend somethng for a 5 yo semi long haired German Shepherd?
Zara's skin and coat does not look best for the past few weeks, she is 35kg so any capsules I looked at work really expensive....
Her coat looks like it has got dandruff in in, flaky bits and no shine - she is perfectly well apart from that. She has gone through similar phase last year aroudn the same time - is it the time for moulting????? NO idea....
She also hot artritis so..
The oild I linked above seems to help for all we need (skin/fur/artritis) - has anyone got any experience with this one or any other?
Any links/recommendations please?
Thanks a lot

I would recommend Fish4Dogs - they sell salmon oil and a fish based dry food that is very good for dogs with dry, scurfy coats.
Their salmon oil is cheaper. If you buy the 3l box it works out at £14.66 per litre compared to £23.99 for the biggest size available from Zooplus. http://www.fish4dogs.com/Products/salmon-oil-500ml.aspx
They do a "Working dog" kibble (so no VAT) at £55 for 15kg. A 35kg dog would need 340-365g per day, which works out at about £1.30 per day. Not the cheapest stuff around but it has great reviews. http://www.fish4dogs.com/Products/Working-Dog-Fish-Complete.aspx
If you sign up for their newsletter or "like" them on FB, you get notification of special offers. The salmon oil comes on special offer every few months. A complementary food called Salmon Mousse is on offer at the moment, 42 x 99g pouches for £22.70. This is not a complete food so has to be fed with dry and is usually short-date when on offer, but freezes well!
The only drawback to the dry food is it pongs! You need a good airtight container to store it or the place reeks of fish "Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
Thanks, I already feed Orijen (fish and original - mixed) and not going to change the food but will look at their oils...0

Give a read on this http://www.lintbells.com/products/yumega-dog
Forgot to say have not used this product but have used the yumove from this company and found the product to be a great help to my old lab.0 -
My dog Daisy had flaky skin and we recently found out she has cancer. We are giving her 4000mg of omega 3 a day - half of this goes in her food which we home-make, and she will gladly lick the rest off a spoon. The improvement in her coat is really amazing. (We're not giving her omega 6 or 9 as they can be detrimental for dogs with cancer).0

Have you tried the magnetic collars to treat the arthritis, I was dubious about these before but my last dog had really bad arthritis in her back legs, it got to the point where she couldnt stand herself up (we had to lift her) and when she squatted to pee she collapsed (again we had to hold her) We tried everything oils pills etc etc, eventually trying one of these collars.
After about a month of wearing it she was getting up and able to pee herself, it wasn't a miracle cure in that she wasn't 100% but she was able to get up with a couple of rocks.
If you do choose to get one, its worth investing in an expensive one as you can get them from poundland, but you would get a stronger magnet on a fridge magnet lol.0 -
Thanks everyone for your replies.
Zara already has a bioflow collar, thanks.
I ma really only interested in various "oils" that someone has used for their dog and can reccomend?
Thanks again0 -
I dont know if this is of any interest I don't have a dog but I have an elderly cat and give him Yumega oil for cats - they also do a dog version http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-and-cat-supplements-pet-skin-supplements-c-5_15/yumega-essential-omega-oils-for-dogs-250ml-p-2643
Since Ive been using it his coat looks fantastic - very glossy and smooth with no flaky skin (the vets always comment on how good it looks) - I don't know if its helped his joints but he seems very agile and less stiff in his back legs when going down the stairs than he used to be.0 -
Cod liver Oil is probably about a tenth the cost of those expensive supplements and will have just as poitive an effect. Also olive oil.
I have given both to my dogs at various times and it has greatly improved their coats and seemed to have a positive effect on my terriers sore joints.

Mutt has evening primrose oil for her skin - seems to have helped with her allergies and itching. Normal human stuff from holland and barrett -I don't ever buy it at full price, only in their regular half price sale. She has either the 1000 or 1300 mg, depending on what it on offer at the time, one a day.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Tinned Sardines or Pilchards. Dirt cheap, full of omega 3 & your dog gets the benefit of all the other nutrients.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0
