A couple of questions for you Ketty.

    1) Have you ceased to trade ? - If you have you MUST complete a Deregistration Form VAT 7 from here :
    http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kb5/hmrc/forms/view.page?record=64dcehSs-Cc&formId=999 and submit to HMRC.
HMRC will then start the process to cancel your VAT registration.

You will then need to file a final VAT return on line.

Also be aware that if you have a credit on your Self Assessment and you registered for VAT as a Sole Proprietor, then it can be set off against any other HMRC debts.
  • hi yes iv ceased trading and filled in that form. no i havnt filed a final vat return yet and i have no other debts.so do i need to complete my final vat return b4 they realease what im owed thank you 4 your reply much appreciated

You have to complete your final return & file it online because otherwise HMRC will issue an assessment based on what they think the value of the return will be.

This assessment is LEGALLY collectible and so IF you have a debt, HMRC will pursue it.

Once all returns are in, if any repayment is due to you, it will be made.
