Photographer Dilemma

Im considering hiring a photographer for approx £700 to simply attend on the day, snap away all day then simply hand us a DVD of the images (with no watermark etc, we would have the copyright).

They at a later date, perhaps our anniversary, we can get the images professionally seen to and a wedding album created.

I just wondered if there were any downsides to this- surely the images once on DVD can be edited in the future, ie touched up etc.

Photographers just seem to be outrageously dear :o

  • They could be edited at a later date but there is nothing like the natural light on a blushing brides skin and beautiful dress.

Where are you based, I may be able to reccomend someone! (I model so know photographers from all over)

No photographer worth his salt would do as you ask.
Dont put your money on it, a lot of press guys have recently lost thier jobs in the industry and they are absolute experts in the field compared to your local weekend warrior wedding photographer.
The days of these £1k + part time wedding togs are coming to an abrupt end as the top end of the game togs are looking for new work.

Good idea but I haven't come across this

alot of photgrapher I've seen charge in excess of £1K surely if they are looking for work they could lower their prices.

It's not the money. It's the risk to their reputation.

Handing over unprocessed work is foolhardy. Anyone could process it however they choose yet it's the photographer's reputation that is on the line. Doesn't sould like a good business plan to me.

Can see your point here however I do think that some phtographer take the P*** with what they charge for copyrights.

  • My wedding photographers were fab :) And although we're based in Nottinghamshire, they will travel all over the place! The package they offer is £799 (a little more than you've said, I know) and includes...

    Free pre-wedding photoshoot
Two photographers with you all day
(from the bride & groom preparations through to the first dance)
Online gallery of your photographs to share with your family and friends
A complete set of ‘Facebook Friendly’ sized photos on a CD for you to upload and show everyone
High Resolution CD of all your wedding photographs from which you can print as many copies as you like for family & friends

I can't recommend them highly enough! PM me if you need their details :)

The way I read the original post, was that the OP had found a photographer already. Sorry if I'm wrong.

All the photographers I've looked at provide a "disc only" option, which is what you describe - except they would do any touching up for you. Some photographers will do two sets - one optimised for printing and one optimised for digital use.

The only downside I can think of doing it that way is that the photographer might have good connections with a wedding album supplier and therefore a better price.

Also, professional photographers are likely to put the album together in a more creative way. I'm not being rude on your skills, but remember that this is their job.
  • My photographer is based in Teesside and charges £380 for:
30 Page Story Book including images of our choice (extra pages can be added at an additional cost)
All images taken on the day put onto disc for to print out anywhere (we have copyright for them).
As many discs as required to give to Family & Friends.
There will be 3 folders on the disc:
Folder 1: all images in colour
Folder 2: selected images in black & white & special effects
Folder 3: all images resized for easy upload to facebook/websites/email etc.
For £20 a DVD with our choice of images to our choice of music.

    I agree with some others.
Our photographer was approx £700 for that we got:

    2 photographers all day
with us while getting ready too
copyright of our pics at no extra charge
disc with FB/email sized images to share
    online gallery
disc with high rez so we could reproduce in colour, black and white and sepia
photobook of up to 180 images

Ours travels all of Uk and would reccomend him if you want the details x

  • My Photographer is a friend and he does it professionally alongside his job.

He charges £600 and that includes:

.Him taking photographs from Bride getting ready all the way until the first dance (All day)
.He will edit all the photo's and give them to us on Disc (without watermark and full copyright)

At the end of the day, you can always get them professional printed after you receive them on disc, as we are but we know someone who professional prints and he is doing it for free for us. But it is well worth it considering a normal photographer doing everything including the album and printing would cost you in excess 1-2k depending on where you live.

I would say £700 is not a bad price, sounds okay!
