damage to car after trip to garage

I'm after some advice before I return to the garage tomoorow

1 week ago I had my rear exhaust changed at a local garage, no complaints previously, however I have noticed this evening that the edge of the bumper closest to tail pipe has melted:eek:. I am returning tommorow to see what they will do about it, but would I be able to request transport to my place of work and back, whilst they complete works approx 10 miles, I feel they have duty of care to make sure that I am not inconvienced by their mistake. comments please, thanks in advance x
Making small changes, hoping they will last....

  • what is the diffrence between the old exhaust and the new 1.

If it is their fault you are entitled to the loss of use of the vehicle, however getting that is another question.

Hi there. You are covered under the Sale Of Goods and Services Act 1982 for works carried out like this. Within that act, there is a provision that the work is carried out to a reasonable standard by a competent professional. It is very subjective to what that actaully means, but I would expect a mechanic to fit the correct exhaust the correct way so as not to damage the car. When you get them to actually fess up and say, aye, ok, we fitted it wrong, they then have to try and ensure you are not out of pocket.

In terms of actually taking you to and from work, some garages do that, but you can only ask. If they refuse, try appealing to their better nature, if that doesn't work, worth quoting a bit of law (SGSA, obligation to minimise losses etc etc) to them to see if that loosens stance a bit. You as the buyer have some power over them in terms of them maintaining their reputation, keeping any repeat business from you, and not persuing further action against them if they don't play nice.

Good luck and I hope they chaufeur drive you in a limo filled with the finest Crystal Champers.
