Vetinary costs. is this price fair?

I recently had to put my dog in to the vets as she got diagnosed as having a stomach bug.

To start with and to clarify I have no problems with any of their care as the dog is more or less well now.

the reason I am asking this is because in the past Ive had to take the dog to the vets and similar treatment cost a lot less.

The breakdown and prices are as follows

Consult £28
Xray of stomach £80 (last paid £50)
IV fluid administration fee £38.50 (am I seriously being charged for someone to put a needle in?)
Catheter Jelco IV 20g £5.94
Vetivex no 11 1L £10.70 x2 = £21.40
Giving Set £10.76
IV injection port £3.02
Synulox 500mg tablets £41.42
Over night stay £45

Grand total of £275

I expected the bill to be perhaps £200 but the xray is much dearer and i cant believe I am being charged for someone to put a needle in. As for £45 to keep the dog in their kennal Id rather put her in a travellodge at that price LOL.

I may be totaly wrong and the prices may be fair but im seriously thinking about changing vets especially as she was dropped off at 4pm and was released 4pm the next day as she only had a stomach bug.

Any comments welcome and im sorry if this is posted in the wrong section.

Cheers steve

Yes, that is reasonable, lucky it wasnt higher to be honest.

my ferret went in a while ago and it cost about the same for the consultancy, ~£80 for the xray and ~£40 for the drugs afterwards.

even if it wasnt reasonable, what could you do about it now?

Do you expect someone to do it for free?

cant do much about it apart from changing vets. my last vets was a lot cheaper.
Im more like victor meldrew these days and love to moan LOL.

Its even harder at the moment considering there isnt much spare money but i will get whatever and spend what ever is needed on my animals even if im not happy with the price.

    Dont be perdantic

If you go the dentist and need a jab you expect to pay for the injection and time not a fee to put a needle in!

No i dont think your being charged for an injection here, I think your pet was administered IV fluids (probably by drip whilst your pet stayed over night)...you paid for the fluid, not the physical injection

I thought that was the vetivex 1 L
That charge appears purely to insert the needle.

The charge is not so much for inserting the needle, but the training required to know where to insert it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • pets are expensive.
we bought a kitten few years ago and after having it 2 months my wife decided for pet insurance 4 quid from sainsburys.
I objected to it as we didnt have one for our own but it was money well spent.
THe tom cat fell ill after 2 years and my bussiness account was almost emptied totally fromthe vet, paying costs upfront and then waiting for reimbursments from sainsbury
    almost 9000 quid !
in the end, we paid for the ashes to be thown in the kent coast;)...

    Get some insurance.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

I would have suggested this earlier in the thread BUT in many cases the excess you have to pay is higher the the 275 the OP shelled out = not worth it.

If you had to pay out 700+ and had and excess of 300 then insurance would be good to have
