If it starts with 09 it's Abbey, if it starts with 20 it's Barclays, 30 is Lloyds, 40 os HSBC/First Direct etc. There are directories telling you which particular bank/branch any sort code belongs to. I think these are online, but if not any bank will have a copy and usually won't mind looking somthing up if asked.

    I have no doubt people can find out the bank if they really want to, but I'm not going to make it easy for them.

    By the way paying cash directly into a bank account is absolutely, fundamentally, positively NOT covered by ebay standard protection.
