Storm damage!

Options
I posted this on another page, so for give me for repeating myself!

Can someone explain the need for home insurance?

I awoke 2 weeks to water coming in through our bedroom ceiling. I phoned the Bank, who explained to me to try and get a quote and if necessary a quick repair. I got the quote, gave it to the 'Loss assessors,' then heard nothing for 2 weeks!

Therefore I phoned the Bank yesterday to be told, 'That according to the Loss assessors. The damage was caused through normal erossion.' The fact that we had suffered an horrendous thunderstorm the previous day, was not taken into account!'

How can they make such a decision, if NO ONE (apart from my roofer) had even been onto my roof? Any advice in how I can persue this further?

First; get other professional advise, if you have to pay for the advise pay and ask for detail explanation of the actions undertaken by the loss adjuster to assess the cause...

Secondly, even if the roof is damaged, you still have a water damage claim..

Storm damage would only be considered where there are high winds - high rainfall on its own would not be enough to constitute a storm - usually, a roof can cope fine with a lot of water but wind is what causes the damage.

Can I ask a few questions? Is it a flat roof? When was it put in? When was the last time any thorough (not just a 'check') maintenance carried out on it?

Secondly, if there is damage internally then your insurer would usually consider this if you have accidental damage on your policy. Not all insurers will though, Budget and Lloyds TSB are two policies that spring to mind as not covering water ingress from a roof under accidental damage.

House has a slate roof, which is in a good state of repair (Where visible) The area where damage is is in a valley. On the night in question it was quite windy along with the rain. There is damage to the ceiling in my bedroom, which will require replastering. I will have to get a seperate estimate for that now thouigh.
