Its nothing like going to Tesco. When I go there I pick and choose the items I want based on all sorts of information most of which is provided by Tesco like country of origin, contents, whether eggs are battery or free range for example, in fact Tesco comply with no end of legislation that makes them give the consumer as informed a choice as possible. I have never said I want to know how much the cleaner earns or how much they pay a company to change light bulbs and I fail to understand why this has been introduced into the argument.

Tescos is actually quite a relevant example, maybe not for food but for other services.

Do you know who supplies Tesco insurance, Tesco Bank or Tesco Mobile?

All are supplied under contract/rebadged third party suppliers - although the bank is now in-house and if you read the posts here you may think that it was better outsourced!

The only relevant question I can see is if the outsourcing to NSS causes more hassle by needing to go to a separate bank to pay money in, not Nationwide.

If that is the case then I can understand but if it has no effect on the operation of the account then it is as irrelevant as the company cleaning the carpets.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

It would appear that dunstonh and opinions4u are in disagreement here.
dunstonh says its none of my business who they employ to clean the carpets and how much they pay them as I am not paying for those services whereas
opinions4u says that toilet cleaning and outsourcing IT is on topic as it affects the cost base of the building society costs which are paid by the members.
All I know is I've got an account with Nationwide and when I looked to open a MySave account with them it turns out I am employing Barclays Bank, Newcastle Building Society and Newcastle Strategic Systems (whoever the **** they are) maybe thats why we all get a savings rate which is below inflation.
And by the way ses6jwg if you have nothing relevant to say I suggest you go to bed. The world will pass you by there as indeed it seems to whilst you are awake.

As already pointed out by another poster it is more likely that Nationwide are able to offer a higher rate of interest on the MySave account because it is outsourced than they would have been able to offer if it was run in house.

The OP lost all credibility with this comment. New Poster, New Troll.

OP, I can see your point.
It is a bit like only buying free-range eggs as a matter of principle but then consuming many caged-hen eggs when buying things made with eggs.

You want to avoid Barclays. Fair enough. You need to set the rules that you want to play by. E.g. will you use a Barclays cash point if it is the only one close by? Will you use a shop / business that banks with Barclays? if someone gives you a personal cheque drawn on a Barclays account will you be happy to pay it into your bank? Etc.
But you do need to accept that this is something quite unique to you. Therefore it is going to have to be something that you will have to put some effort into researching.
So if you don't like the deal Nationwide has with Barclays then next time you want to open account check if the new place has any links with Barclays before you open it.
I presume, given that you now know about this link, that the information wasn't hidden - it just took some finding out.

    Indeed it is.

Has OP checked that Tesco don't bank their takings with Barclays? I think we should be told! :rotfl:
  • A long time since I started this thread and got a universal bashing from all you internet trolls out there but heh ho time seems to have proved me right about Barclays. Chairman and CEO resigned over dodgy practices that may have affected all of us. You guys carry on thinking that all in the world is fine as long as you are not affected - sorry but its not working like that.

It's the same situation with credit cards and utilities, which all take payments through a collection account at a bank. Unfortunately when paying council tax we don't get any choice about what bank the council uses. If we don't like it, we can only move house.

Of course there would be nothing to stop councils and companies having collection accounts at all the main banks, for the convenience of their customers (hah!). If they did, you'd be able to pay them by an instantaneous internal transfer at your own bank. Ought to be cheaper for the payees as well.
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis

... and as a result my Barclays shares have steadily climbed since both announcements.

    That certainly "affected" me! ;)
    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

Well, as long as you've satisfied yourself.

Which appears to have been the whole point of this thread.
