Can anyone suggest a really good cookbook for veggie's that works well?

    Thanks everyone.

Veggie cookbooks - Rose Elliott and Cas Clarke. Rose Elliott being more a 1970s cookbook writer and Cas Clarke more a turn of the century one. Both of them write good veggie cookbooks though. Rose Elliott IS a "veggie" and Cas Clarke understands us well.

Can anyone suggest a really good cookbook for veggie's that works well?

    Thanks everyone.

Someone else recommended Rose Elliott and I'd like to second that suggestion. I have her Bean Book, her Cheap and Easy Cookbook, and her New Vegetarian Cookbook. All are well used, even though I'm a meat eater.

I'd also like to suggest the BBC's food website. They have some fantastic stuff. And they explain techniques. If you like Indian food, try Indian Food Forever. It has an interesting selection of veggie recipes but I've not cooked from it yet.

  • Thanks for the veggie recipe books I'll take a look in the library and see what I can get.

I was wondering about slow cooker recipe books, that seems to be a whole different world of cooking! I got mine out of it's box today and made my first veggie stew. Lentils, sweet pot's, onions, garlic, 2 x stock cubes and water. Turned out really well, just added some arrowroot to thicken at the end.

It was really nice just chucking it into the pot and rather than having to start cooking dinner was ready! It was a lovely feeling.

So thanks to everyone on this and other posts for suggesting.

What are your favourite easy veggie recipes?

I got the breville 3.5ltr which seems about right for 1.

Hi we are going to use an old quilt to cover the front door this winter. Ours is an old house with drafts everywhere. We do have curtains up at every door during winter. Thermal socks are great and lots of layers. Pjs under your clothing are fab for keeping the cold out.
Freecycle is a great place to find things you need, also gumtree. Tin foil behind the radiators helps keep in the heat.
  • I can recomend Putting a duvet over the mattress under the bottom sheet, bed socks are also a must. When we were kids when mum was cooking dinner in the oven she used to pop a couple of house bricks in the bottom of the oven to warm through, then wrapped in an old towel and popped in a pillow case they make a great and very long lasting bed warmer that never leakes! still do this now. :-) also if you forget a quick blast with a hairdrier takes the chill off a bed quickly

In the evenings....fingerless gloves are great too as they do really keep fingers toasty, and you can type in them too.

Cheap blankets and towels? ask in charity shops if they have any blankets/towels for dogs....most keep ones that are not brand new for this use, and will usually keep you some...all they need is a long wash and they will come up clean and new.

Books? find out at the local library when they are having a book sale (im an assistant manager at a library) they will be clearing out old stock all the tiome and often store it for sales so if your looking for say cookerybooks just ask most times they will be more than happy to help....also most libraries can let you have books for a "Holiday loan" so you can have them for 6 weeks at a time.

I lived all the last 2 winters with no heating and yep it got flippin cold last year when it was -6 in my kitchen one morning :D but I cant afford to get it fixed and Im now used to it so plan ahead

Good luck and keep us posted
