Nervous, Court on Friday!

Hi everyone, Hubby and I now have an appointment at Coventry court on Friday, I thought I was doing quite well. But today I feel a nervous wreck.
My hubby had a stroke in 2007,(the main reason for the insolvency) and along with substantial physical disabilities the CVA left him with severe aphasia (the inability to speak more than a few simple words). He understands the concept of Bankruptcy, and knows that we have to go for it, but can you see the aphasia being a problem?

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear you are getting nervous about court, this happened to me as well, I was fine for a while about it, even counting down the days and then a day or so before I went to peices!

I'm afraid I don't know anything about your husband's condition but I wanted to let you know that the court experience is really very straightforward and nothing to worry about. Everyone in the court was friendly and professional and the process was really very quick and simple (about an hour but most of that was in a waiting room). We didn't need to see a judge.

The first time I was asked about health conditions was by the Official Reciever on the initial phone call which is so they can make any adjustments required for the main interview.

Good Luck for Friday, let us know how you get on. It's just over a week since my BR and I feel a bit more relief every single day.
  • Hi, just wanted to say good luck for Friday. My experience of the actual day was fairly straightforward too. In the court I went to there was no appointment so the majority was just waiting around to be seen. I didn't see the judge either, the court said there was no need. The staff were friendly and professional and basically went through the form to make sure it was completed correctly. The actual build up was worse than the day itself. My BR was almost one year away (due to be discharged next Wednesday). I can honestly say I don't regret making the decision to go BR (I maybe regret some decisions made prior but whats done is done eh). The last year has been stress free, I don't dread the phone ringing or the post coming and I am also a little better off financially even with an IPA.
Good luck - you will be fine

Thank you newlife, In a mess and Deb
It'd kind of comforting to know that someone else felt the same.
I have to be pragmatic and strong for both of us these days, and I usually am. But I feel like I'm facing the death penalty, It's probably hormonal you know. I am 50 this year!
  • Your husband being able only to speak a few simple words is a positive, not a negative.

If only more people who appear in court - particularly lawyers - were the same.

Hi, I'm afraid that I could see a problem, not that I want to worry you, it is very difficult to say without knowing anything about the condition, although you know he fully understands it the problem could be. With him communicating this to the court staff. Can he write, if so it may be worth him writing a letter in his own time and comfort explaining that he understands, or perhaps a letter from a doctor or something like that

What on earth would the alternative be???????
  • You say: "Hubby understands the concept of bankruptcy and knows that we have to go for it."

While it could be argued you are not qualified to offer a medical opinion, you are his spouse, so are well-placed to know.

I think you have it covered.
  • Good luck on Friday Shap. Let us know how you get on.
