you dont need a pc/laptop to run an ipad, as said iOS5 will back up to icloud, they are selling the ipads so that they can just be set up over the net.
That being said all your music is on an external hard drive, im not sure if there is any way of getting it onto an ipad... unless you can do it via a router?
If the music wasnt an issue i would say an ipad would be great for you, but a £400 laptop can probably do a lot more!0 -
Get the lappy..dont bother with the ipad.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

You don't necessarily need a computer to start up your iPad. If you buy one from the Apple store they will set it up for you there and then so it's all working and ready for you.
However, if you want to put music from existing CD's that will be very difficult without a computer.
It would probably be best for you to buy a laptop as you will need to back up your iPad and update the software and that will be impossible without a joint computer device.
Hope you get sorted!0 -
You can pick up a netbook for less than £200 which will suffice for your internet needs, get yourself an mp3 player or if you NEED an iPod go for one of those, the iPad don't get me wrong is a nice gadget, but it's use is limited and it's best used when coupled with a computer.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

iOS5 is going to be the new Apple (iPad/iPhone) operating system.
It's rumoured to be cloud based, so you can back-up and download from the cloud (cloud is just the Internet), but I still feel you'll only get the full use of a i-Device if you also have a Laptop / PC, that way you can copy your own music, photos, files etc.
There is no rumour about it - it has already been announced that you do not need a computer to run a iPad (or iPhone) when its software is upgraded to iOS5 which will be in the next couple of weeks.0 -

Another issue could be if you don't already have a PC / Laptop you won't have Broadband or WiFi, so therefore you'd need a 3G connection for your iPad either via a 3G iPad, MiFi or another Mobile Phone and if you're downloading music, apps, maybe Video never mind iOS updates you could end up with a very big mobile bill.
Don't get me wrong I'm an Apple Fan, I have an iPad, iPhone, Touch and MacBook but I wouldn't recommend an iPad as a replacement to a PC / Laptop / Netbook just a companion to one of those.0
