Wireless N upgrade - worth it?

Options
I recently moved to a new broadband provider and now have a wireless N router. All my PCs have wireless b/g adapters/cards.

Would I see a significant improvement in day to day surfing/watching iplayer/youtube etc if I upgrade to wireless N cards?

My connection speed is 8-9Mbps.

in a word, no :) If you wanted to transfer large files on a regular basis between your devices, yes. But that's what external hdd's are for ;)

Where your internet is concerned, no. The speed of data transfer from the internet (iPlayer etc) is that it can only go as fast as your network can. Even if you had an old modem/router that could only do 100MBPs your internet connection is far slower than that. The weakest link is always your internet speed.

However, the only way you would see a difference is if you were transferring large files from one computer to another. Both need to be N enabled and if using the 5GHz frequency both computers would need to be 'in line of sight' of each other andthe modem/router.. Basically 5GHz isn't as reliable as 2,.4GHz as walls etc would interfere with the 5GHz signal.
  • Agree on the speed front the only benefit you may get is better/more resilient signal around the house.

I upgraded to N router and 2/3 N wireless dongles.

Mainly as my house was being swamped by a neighbours BT Hub.

As the others have there is no noticeable difference between the remaining G dongle and the new ones but on an all G setup the other two were dreadful and kept dropping.
