Using the Job centre site for job search

  • I stuggle using the Job Centre website. Not only do you not get jobs that are relevant but you then often have to phone them up for more information.

I prefer Monster because you can just click "apply online" and send your ready-made CV directly.

    Ha vice versa here

The best way does seem to be postcode, as suggested above, but it still is hit and miss. Also I hate how you have to phone an 0845 number (I think) to get info on them, why can't they put it on the web. Also the jobs can be really out of date. I find the local papers and the free jobs papers to be better! They have all the job centre jobs plus more, contact details so you could actually apply for them and proper closing dates etc.

I think (for me) the job center is the best one, its fish that sends me everywhere, unless I do it through my local rag, then I can get somewhere close to home.

There are usually about 9 pages of jobs in my local jobcenter page to look at.

Yes, jobcentre search has always been pants.
After it runs out of results, it gives random things
And often it runs out of results at 1 or 3.

It's worse in rural areas obviously as we notice it more because of the lack of jobs.
  • The problem witht the JC search engine is known and will be addressed in updates that are planned.

The issue about out of date vacancies is not just down to the JC. There are many employer placed vacancies (EDON) which may not have been updated by the employer when filled / interviewing etc. Another common issue is Agency vacancies where the vacancy has been filled and the Agency haven't (deliberately ?) informed the JC.

Vacancies can be closed instantly and the whole database of over 400,000 vacancies relies on someone telling the JC theat the vacancy has been filled.

There are dedicated team who update the database, inputting new and closing old vacancies each day.

TOP TIP.. when calling an Agency about the vacancy, start the call by asking if the specific vacancy is still live. If they say no.. hang up, don't even give your name. Advise the JC and it will be closed there and then ! Saves a lot of wasted time and helps everyone !

Yes - the jobcentre plus website is nearly a complete waste of time for a jobsearch...

You get loads of search results that don't match the criteria you input - such as jobs 100's miles from where you live - it's frustrating and not at all helpful...

I just did a search on the link that was posted and found many jobs available directly in my home town. I think it's probably better to just search through all the jobs in designated towns and that way you don't end up in Scotland when you live in Cornwall.

In a perfect world where everything is rosy, yes. But then if the world was perfect then nobody would need to use the JC !!

There is a limit to what can be checked by the very small Vacancy teams and the employers should notify the JC to close the Vacancy.

A percentage are checked and it is often the case that a Jobseeker informs the staff that the vacancy has been filled. These are then taken off the database quickly.
