Howdens Quote

In the process of buying our first ever kitchen. We've chosen the Burford White from Howdens and have just had a quote through our builder for about £5,400 which was more than I was expecting.

Does it seem reasonable? I've noticed they've added in some recycling bin unit which we didn't ask for but are there any other obvious added extras which are unnecessary in this quote.

How much is your builder charging you to fit? What is the cost price of your kitchen?

I have just had a new kitchen fitted. I have found that the most expensive companies are the larger ones. You would expect them to have economies of scale and be able to offer cheaper units and appliances but this isn't always the case.

I used a small local firm who recommended a fitter. We shaved around £2000 off of the price quoted by companies like B&Q and Wickes.

The larger companies make their money on financing and fitting charges. So if you have the money pay them in full after you are happy with the job and use an independent fitter, it sounds like you are. Also get them to tell you the price of any additional plumbing, structural or electrical work before they do it as they will add this on.

only need one cutlery tray. Dont listen to ptvw, howdens dont offer fiance nor fitting, but are largest firm in the country. Remember they have their October sale next month. Has your builder shown you a quote or just told you the price? you have soft close on all your units but not your drawer stack. Without seeing your plan thats does look like a lot of end panels seeing as you dont need them as the burford white comes on a white carcass

  • Thanks for that. Yes he's shown us the quote. We have a galley kitchen with cupboards along parallel sides. What exactly are the end panels i.e. when would you need them?

to clad exposed ends so you dont see the side of the unit, but having a white kitchen you wont need them, unless you have gone for the Gloss??

Hi Chillipip - we have supplied and fitted many Howdens kitchens over the years.
They used to be thought of as 'cheap and cheerful', but I believe their quality has vastly improved in recent years, and a lot more of the finishing touches have been added to the ranges, ergo they're not as inexpensive as they were.
It's very difficult to say if any of your items are surplus to requirements without seeing your floorpans.
The end panels on the Burford kitchen are probably necessary on the basis that the white of the underlying units and the white of the actual kitchen doors/infills could be quite different.
I think the price you have been quoted isn't outlandishly high. I know the oak worktops are quite expensive - and look lovely once oiled and fitted too.
Our local branch is currently advertising it's 'Kitchen Madness' discounts, so it might be worth asking your builder if this might apply to your branch in the near future too.
  • Hi
i would say that sounds like quite alot, esp as u have no appliances with it. i run my own company selling kitchens so i know what im talking about, you can save yourself some money by buying a kitchen with colour coded carcasses,
there are too many end panels shown on the list for a galley kitchen, if all your units are running side to side there is no need for all these,
for that amount of money, i supply kitchen, worktops, appliances, fit and even tile if required,
i would shop around a little more, builders like howdens because the carcasses are rigid, but you could save more if you can find a good quality flat pack,
for example try crown's lifestyle kitchens cheap and cheerful with a wide range of door to choose from.:)
  • Howdens have just had their sale unless they do one every month? The one near me has anyway (Warrington) I hope that helps

It's definitely true that flatpack units are cheaper. The only danger is the joiner will charge extra at the other side for the additional time and labour for putting together and fitting the units on site.

Your builder should be able to supply you with the CAD plans of your kitchen.
I would consider taking them on the QT to a good joiner recommended by a friend or family member, and asking them to give you a quote too.
At least then you have something to compare to.

Just to put your mind at rest, based on the brands and quality of appliances we supply, we definitely couldn't have supplied and fitted a comparable quality of kitchen and included appliances for the price you have been quoted.

The market is currently very competitive price-wise, but the qualities of kitchen units, associated items and joiners vary widely.
I think I've probably stated the obvious there.
