Did anyone else get nevous when they first used coupons?

I know it sounds really silly but it never crossed my mind to use coupons whether I was buying the item or not until I started reading this forum.

I picked up a couple of the tesco quit packs and when I went to use the coupons at the checkout I felt all nervous and just put them back in my pocket paid for my shopping and left

  • ah bless mezamoo (by the way welcome to MSE ).

In the beginning and even sometimes now I still get that nervous feeling and get butterflies in my belly. Before I go I write a shopping list and have an envelope in my bag with my vouchers in.

Then when I am ready to pay I go to a male SA in the hope that they will indeed scan my vouchers. Once it is totalled I then find my envelope and get my vouchers out. (Previously they were loose in my handbag and I'd lose some !). I ask them would they mind scanning these and 9 times out of 10 they do. Being a seasoned voucher user you would think I wouldn't get nervous but I still do although I realise that mostly I will be successful.

The quit packs ones are different in the sense that they are tesco own vouchers because of this, I find the cashiers do accept the vouchers in the most part, yes you will get a jobsworth but mostly I am successful. If ever they question them I say I have used them the day before with no problems (which is usually true) and that I received them through the post (also true as several kind Mse peeps sent me some).

Apologies for the essay but it does get easier with time and the savings can make it a very worthwhile activity. Soon you'll be a voucher anorak like me ! LOL

Hi there Mezamoo for some reason i read coupons as condoms and nearly choked on my yoghurt.
Anyway yes i used to get nervous about using coupons. But then because we were struggling so much i decided just to do it and use them. Most of them went through but one or two didn't. At the end of the day they can only refuse them. Most of the time though they go through fine. More money in my pocket.

I have never used comdoms in Tesco ... but I imagine it would make you nervous!

Alternately you could try using coupons ... Which may or may not make you nervous ... personally I still feel a little moment of fear/nerves ... though often I wonder why!

So it's not just me then...weird isn't it, guess it's got something to do with a tiny bubble of fear of being found out, very bizarre

I used to get embarrased with my sister using vouchers then I had a go, for the past 2 months I have never been refused, although only using maybe £2-£4 vouchers on a £50-£80 shop. However I used 3 vouchers the other day at Asda totally 85pence!!! on a £60shop, the checkout lady scanned them through and then questioned if I had bought the stuff, which I replied 'no' and she told me next time they would only accept vouchers on products I had bought. Now a bit wary, so I think I'll be going to tesco in the future.

I get embarrassed when I use vouchers even now. Particularly ones where I think I might be pushing it (such as using £15 worth of clothing vouchers in one transaction.)

Luckily I've only had one occasion when the SA made a point of limiting the number she would accept and most SA's are very helpful. :) (I never try to use more than 10% off a standard food shop though.)

I get nervous every single time!! I've only started using coupons for things I haven't bought for a few months now, and it doesn't get easier! But, it feels FANTASTIC when you see deductions off your bill! (I get excited over £3 - £4 deductions! LOL.

I just ask 'could you try these please? I'm not sure which ones will work' Or if it's my usual SA, I'll say 'still o.k to hand over my coupons?' She usually asks how many bags I'm re-using as well!

LOL, emilyt and Little Bill :)

Mezamoo, yes I did feel nervous at first, it's perfecty normal. What I found helps is to have a routine. I have a little stash of coupons in my pocket. After the shop assistant has scanned my Clubcard and given it back, I just reach in my pocket and hand over the coupons, and ask "Can you take these please?" Then I turn away and carry on packing the shopping, so I'm not looking at them. I think it helps if they don't feel under pressure!

As long as it is store policy to accept coupons, I find they usually take a few quite happily. If I'm unlucky and they say no, I just thank them anyway and put them back in my pocket. Nothing lost!

Good luck! And jsut remember, the worst that can happen is they say no! The best is, you save money!
