Hi all
I'm looking to buy a used car this week. Dealer says he can provide HPI check in the cost, but can this be forged in anyway?
Shall I just do my own one? Is the best company to use HPI, and the cost £20.50?
Cheers

Yes, it's piece of mind and for the money is well worth it. Use the RAC if the car is valued at under £5k or the HPi website if it's over that amount (the RAC uses HPi but charges only about £15 I think, the trade off is they only have a liability up to £5k)
I never accept another persons HPi, garage or not.0 -
Can I ask why you are bothering going to a dealer? He is obliged by law to give you a whole host of legal protection, and here is one that you are wanting to buy additionally on top. If you don't believe he's HPi'd it, don't believe anything else and walk away.0

Most Dealers pay a monthly/annual fee for HPI checks, If i was you I would ask the dealer to start up the HPI software while you watch them input the details of the car and then print off a copy that is absolutely up to date.
I guess anything can be forged, but its highly unlikely the software has been played with too.
Id be satisfied with that and I have worked as a mechanic in various dealers for almost 10 years

Just make sure you pay at least part of the cost of the car by credit card, then even if it turns out to be a write-off or whatever, and the garage has ceased trading, you can take the credit card company to court instead. Then you don't need an HPI check (although it would give some peace of mind). We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

Thanks all
I paid deposit (£200) on credit card so that would help. It's the first car I've ever bought by myself so was just a bit unsure of procedure. Thanks Ghostrider I used RAC and it was all good
