National Express breakdowns

Do National Express not service their coaches? My girlfriend has needed to catch them twice this month and both times there has been problems due to faulty vehicles. The first one a couple of weeks ago broke down not long in to the journey and she had to wait for a replacement one. This morning she was booked on one to get her to Stansted airport and it broke down before even picking her up, the time taken for a replacement would have made her miss her flight so she took a £50 cab to the airport.

Can we even claim refunds given replacements were provided (or in the second case in the process of being provided)?

National Express don't own most of their coaches. They are run by other companies on behalf of National Express. Yes they will be well serviced, but they are also used 7 days a week for about 18 hours a day.

I would have thought you would be able to claim something, but will have to check on that.

As a lorry driver I drove up to 120,000 miles a year some years doing night runs. And when I got out of that wagon at 5am, someone else got in and did an equivalent mileage on days. So that one wagon was doing nearly a quarter of a million miles a year. National Express coaches run similar mileages so what do you think the chances of them breaking down are?

I think it's more of an indication of cut backs being made, service schedules being altered and possibly staff redundancies.

Everyone has been hit over the last few years, the good companies dumped useless overpaid managers, the not so good found useless managers hiding under their desks, getting rid of decent workers by the dozen (remember it'd be 3 or 4 workers to the salary of one useless manager). As a result these companies are now finding themselves with lot's of problems, particularly in the area's which are often taken for granted, like maintenance and reliability......

National Express themselves have cut over 750 jobs.
