I used Hammerite radiator paint and found it good. It did smell a bit, but I did it in summer, so no need to put the radiators on right after. I need to do my kitchen one, and a second coat on another and I'm going to wait till the heating is off.

i've painted load of rads with emulsion , if they are glossed i usually undercoat them 1st then a couple of coats of emu , if the rad is in good nick then the paint won't flake off

Thank you for the kind replies.

After spending 3 nights/coats using radiator paint which is like using glue to paint with, I decided to switch to gloss paint. This went on a lot smoother and looks a lot better.
The radiator paint was very patchy and not covering the paint underneath.

Ok, can I ask as well?

I may need to repaint quite a few radiators in the house as part of redecorating process, so... I understand I need to sand the radiator first a bit, don't I? Then apply undercoat/primer and then the final paint.

Now, do you paint just the front of the radiator and the top, or also the back side? For that I imagine it would have to be removed = system drained, definitely not possible in winter.

I have noticed a bit of rust on some of my radiators - so, if I sand those down and apply primer/undercoat, it should be ok in the long run?

It seems to be a pretty pointless exercise to paint the back of a radiator. I have never used any other paint than standard gloss, and never had a problem with it.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
