BT vision cancellation

we had BT vision installed last week and thought it was something similar to sky. we were wrong and when we tried to upgrade our pack to get more channels (more than just freeview which we have on out tv already) we were then told that the increase tothe 'unlimited pack' from the 'essentials pack' simply includes on demand and has nothing to do with more channels.
I feel ive been completely miss-sold this product and (proably wrongly) assumed we would have at least a 7 day satisfaction guarantee. BT have now said we are in a contract as soon as we got the box and said yes to it and cannot cancel the contract. Is this right or do consumer rights suggest otherwise???

In what way was it missold to you? Which channels were you promised?
  • we said we wanted extra channels like discovery and kids chanels etc, the standard channels you get on sky instead we simply have freeview channels which we already had.
  • I had exactly the same problem- stick to your guns- i requested the recording of the telephone conversation as i was promised all the channels i got with sky- i was led to believe it was a subscriber service- not just a freeview box which in effect it was. Anyway i did all this over the phone- made an official complaint- funnily enough they couldnt find the initial converstation but because i threatened legal action- and they couldnt verify that i wasnt mis sold they cancelled the contract and i returned the equipment. Be warned though- it took 6 months to hvae all the charges removed/refunded. I cancelled the direct debit and only paid what i knew i owed. its all sorted now but it was such a hassle- never again!
My advice would be request the initial call recording, make an official complaint and from now on make a note of peoples names, departments, time of call, date etc as you will probably need all this to sort it all out.
    Good luck

That tells me what you wanted, not what was offered to you .Which doesn't answer the question of what was promised to you.

To get proper advice you need to be clear about:

How was the service sold? (In person, you called them, they called you, online etc )

What EXACTLY was offered to you (channels, programmes, films etc )?

Exactly why you are unhappy (are the programmes you want to watch not available or is it the method of transmission etc)?

There is no 7 day satisfaction guarantee, only a 7 day right to cancel a distance contract (DSR). In this case however the right to cancel under DSR is no longer aavailable if you start to use the service. As soon as you watched your first program the service started and the right to cancel under DSR is ended.

You should have done a bit more research however, it's not as if the channel info of what is available on BT vision isn't plastered all over the net, I can't see a single link that say's it's anything but freeview thats offered.

OP, did you do any research online before parting with your cash, or just do it all over the phone with BT?

Because a cursory glance of the internet, even bt's own site (with the price listings and so on) clearly show it's a glorified freeview box with on demand tacked on.

and being that it's a freeview box, check to see if it has a common interface slot, because if it does, and top up tv offers discovery, you CAN get it, but through them.

BT Vision is sold as freeview plus on demand telly; it doesn't purport to offer the cable channels you get with Sky or Virgin. Did you assume you'd get these or were you told you could get these?

This is a clear case of mis-selling. I'm amazed they're doing that though. It's a bit like my buying a car, asking if it's a plane to be told 'yes, madam, of course it flies'.

  • how much are you paying for b.t vision? we had sky and it was costing us about £45 a month and we decided we couldn't afford it so had b.t vision when we moved, I think to be honest you should realise you get what you pay for!

This is what I've been trying to get a straight answer to, the crux of the issue.
