Internet Explorer very slow loading some pages

While I have got over this problem by using Firefox I still want Internet Explorer 6 working correctly.
On certain sites it's very slow. It seems to stall loading graphics but sometimes won't load a simple page. Youtube is particularly bad. Other sites it's variable. Sometimes it won't even go back to a page like the Google search. Initially I thought it was the connection but that's fine on another PC and Firefox has no problem. Downloading files is also fine. The temporary internet files folder is kept empty besides a few cookies.
I loaded IE7 but no change. Went back to IE6 which has had no effect. I checked advanced settings to make sure there was no problem with loading graphics files.
Any ideas?

Some ideas:
Disable any firewalls temporarily to see if that's causing the problem. Which antivirus or firewall are you running, if any?
Download and run https://www.ccleaner.com (untick Yahoo toolbar when installing) and tick Delete Index.dat files in the IE options and run the cleaner. Restart the computer and try IE.
Scan for spyware/malware - see the sticky thread on this forum.0 -

I know why you shouldn't use IE but I still want it to be working.
I've tried disabling Zone Alarm which had no effect and checked for spyware etc. I'll try ccleaner now.0 -
I've now run ccleaner and rerun spybot, making sure it was fully updated. However the problem persists. It is odd how the problem seems to at least start with a lack of graphics loading on certain sites like Youtube while other sites with graphics load with no problem.0

Thanks for the suggestion but there are no updates. It's a Ati Mobility Radeon 9700 in an Acer laptop. Ati updates are incompatible and Acer have no updates.0
