Age 'sweet spot' for buying a nearly new car?

2 years is good enough for making sure the "teething problems" have all been taken care of, by this time it'll need a couple of new tyre's and not a fat lot else.
Value wise, it's a an exponential curve and when you place value versus maintenance costs/etc, 2 to 4 years is probably the best.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Thank you, everyone - lots to think about. I finish my PhD in just over 2 years so I might wait until then (assuming I get a job, LOL)

There's no definitive answer as it depends on the car in question, make, model and your budget etc.
I like to try to aim for 1-3 year olds depending on what deal the garage is prepared to offer re warranty etc.:A0
