windows media player problem

Im currently using windows 98 SE, and am trying to view internet items using the WMP version 7.10.10.3059, however every time i try to stream it misses audio, becomes unsettled, and eventually crashes and freezes the whole system, and i have to restart the comp again.
I use real player for all other items with no probs, but unfortunate seems some items (e.g. bbc sport highlights) only use WMP
Is there anything i can do? Maybe an older version of WMP or something which will work?

Version 7 is quite old already (it's now at version 11). Could be some sites aren't compatible with such old versions."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx v11 is for xp, so is v10.
looks like v9 is the latest one for 98se.
i ll give it a go,see how long it takes to freeze up on this version!0 -
tried v9 and still keeps freezing the comp, looks like this player is a load of crap, why the bbc and other sites use it is beyond belief.
any other ideas please?0 -

It maybe that your PC is slightly crap and out of date by 9years but have you a link to the site where your trying to stream from as it maybe the crap website.0 -

or maybe the player is the problem. realplayer works fine so why not the windows version?
the crap site you refer to is the bbc! the following link
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/default.stm
then under "CRICKET HIGHLIGHTS AND FEATURES" click on Highlights: Australia v England ODI
is it any better for anyone else.0 -

This maybe a performance issue try in tools, options then look for performance then lower it, now that maybe an incorrect way to look for the performance setting as its been a long while sine Ive used wmp 7.0.
I cant see that BBC site as my PC is allergic to cricket :whistle:0 -

The BBC site tries to foist Real Player onto you to watch their video content. Why not use Real Alternative? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
