Exploding Tomato Ketchup

They might have wanted the bottle for the use by date and batch number.
You only need to keep it in the fridge once opened.0 -
Jo - Glad is right about why Heinz want an envelope. I've complained and sent back some formula milk before (foreign body in it!) and a jar of baby food (lump of solid matter).
In both cases the company investigated what had happened. The foreign body in the milk turned out to be a peice of rice (they couldn't explain how it got there) and the baby food it was just a lump of baby food that had conjealed (something to do with the way they had heated the food which had since been changed).
In both cased my postage was refunded. For the milk i received 4 tins (1 to replace the other 3 free) and for the baby food a coupon for a free jar plus a cookbook for baby and toddler meals0 -
Under Part 1 of The Consumer Protection Act, the manufacturer of products can be sued for damages to persons or property over £250 as opposed to the retailer as per usual consumer rights with suppliers. I suppose a cupboard full of food could amount to more than £250 if was thrown out and needed to be replaced along with any cupboard repairs. But would need the offending item to pursue it.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0

Thanks for responding! As previously stated I have returned the item to them at their request.0 -
You are supposed to store opened bottles of ketchup in the fridge and eat within 8 weeks of opening, according to label on the bottle I have.
When exposed to the air, tomato sauce can start to ferment. If the sauce was stored in a warm place, like a cupboard next to the cooker, the fermentation would speed up. Lots of gas is given off and if the sauce isn't opened regular, it will build up in the bottle and eventually explode.
I don't think you have any sort of compensation claim if you didn't store it properly and didn't eat it within the specified time. Here I go again on my own....0 -
There's been a lot of posting on this thread since I last looked. It is going to take me ages to ketchup.0

Got a response this morning from Heinz. They say "A natural airborne yeast spore has entered the bottle .... Please accept the enclosed voucher in order to obtain a replacement product of your choice." They enclosed a voucher for £10.0
