AXA travel insurance warning

Options
At the end of July I travelled to Kos from Cardiff with Thompson.
On my return my luggage was damaged & several items were missing & two were damaged. I was made aware of the damage as I put the bag into the car in the very busy car park.
I called the baggage services & they knew all aboyt the bag being damaged!! I was asked what was damaged/missing & advised the person of the items.

I got the bag replaced within a week by Thompson straight to my home & had to claim for the items damaged & missing through my travel insurance ( AXA Travel insurance).:D

After several telephone calls & numerous pieces of paperwork I have finally recieved a cheque which doesn't even come close to any one of the items missing.
They are saying the airline have no record of any items missing only the damaged ones!
Can anyone suggest which avenue to chase this & get compensated correctly?

  • Did you get the name of the person you called at baggage services? Even if you didn't, contact them and give them the name of the person you spoke to and/or the time and date of the phone conversation,. Hopefully, as they asked you for the list of items missing, they should have made a note of them and kept the information on file. Even if no note was made, then the conversation may well have been recorded so ask for a copy of the recording. If you can get it in writing then you might get a bit further with your insurers.

I'm not sure I understand what happened...

You were coming back from Kos to Cardiff, presumably by air? So when you left Kos you checked in a number of bags? And when you arrived at Cardiff, some were damaged and some were missing?

In which case, when you picked up your bags from the conveyor belt, did you not realise that some were missing? Why did you not report the loss to the baggage desk that is in the baggage reclaim area?

It is normal practice to report lost/damaged checked luggage within the baggage claim area and collect evidence of this report (a piece of paper known as a Property Irregularity Report, or PIR). Insurance companies usually require a PIR in order to deal with claims relating to checked baggage.
  • Voyager,
I read it to be that when the OP arrived at Cardiff their bag was damaged and this damage wasn't noticed until the bag was being loaded into their car and it was some of the contents of this bag that were damaged and lost.

GPF, did you get a copy of the damage report from the airline or baggage handling company?
Without this you will have a very hard, if not difficult time getting full compensation.

Another thing to bear in mind is that many insurance companies have a fairly high excess and they may also only pay you for the estimated used value of the goods and not full replacment cost.

I was lucky as baggage service made a note of the damage & thats why they accepted the claim when I called back. Never had a hard copy of the report but was advised it was ok as it was on the system.
Excess wise its £65, so it is worth trying to claim £400 worth of items I got damaged/stolen.

:D Having spoke to the baggage services (again) at Cardiff Airport. I have managed to sort the problem out ( I hope).
When the insurance company called baggage services, the person they spoke to was not aware of a section on the screen that had "stolen/lost" items listed.
All I need to do now(I hope) is ensure my insurance company call them, to confirm I am telling the truth.

All being well I should get a positive reply within the next 5-7 days..:D

Then I can chase up another issue that the wife has only got £100 compensation for a $200 pair of shoes & cannot replace them for the £100.
As policy is not a "NEW for OLD" policy, could I claim the difference from the airline?:o

There's no reason why you shouldn't try. The worst that could happen is that they refuse the claim so you may as well give it a go.

I think this thread is inappropriately titled, since it was the airline and not the insurance company at fault here.....

    Very misleading.

Actually it was the baggage handlers and they don't work for the airline, they work for the airport or handling agents.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

So why have "I" had to chase the insurance company & get the correct information for them, as they are accusing me of frauid!
Is that not what you pay your insurance premium for, they provide cover & service (which was a bad service IMO as they didn't ask the baggage dept about the lost/stolen items) should you need the cover?

I put "warning" because they sent a letter & a cheque (in my opinion a "get out") expecting me to take it & forget the other items.

    Each to their i own I suppose..:rotfl:
