Damaged packaging and no item

Options
Hi, looking for a little bit of advice please. I bought a little charm for a bracelet from ebay the other day. It arrived today but the envelope was all ripped at the corner and the charm was missing. Must have fallen out. I am a bit annoyed at how poorly it was packaged - I paid £28 for it and it was only in a little envelope - not cushioning or anything.
The main thing I want to know is what do I do now? I'm gutted about the charm not being there as it is very tricky to find. But I really want to know how I go about getting my money back. Do I claim for item not received since I only got the packaging?
Thanks in advance! :)

Contact the seller to start with, keep the envelope as they may want it back, (although I don't think that jewellery is covered by RM unless sent special delivery).
Let them know what's happened & see if they offer to refund you, if not that's when you make a claim but only ever after you've given the seller the chance to put it right.
  • Did you sign for it?
    • If yes then file a significantly not as described dispute, afterall, you didn't pay for a torn envelope
    • If no then file an item not recieved dispute, because you didn't recieve it (obviously :rotfl:)
Most importantly, open the disputes in PayPal NOT eBay

Thanks for the advice. No I didn't need to sign for it - it was only sent 2nd class. Contacted the seller today and she replied but didn't offer me a refund. How long do you think I should wait before opening a dispute? I want to give her a chance (as I've had things I've sold go missing before) but don't want to leave it too long.

Well seller has not offered a refudn so I'm not sure whether waiting any longer has any benefit at all. I do always suggest though that buyers say outright that they want a refund if there is an issue, so at least it gives the seller a chance to make good.

However, I would suggest you now go for a INR claim on the basis that your charm has not arrived.

Thanks soolin. Should I open it in ebay or in paypal? Sorry if this all seems really obvious. Only ever had something not turn up once and the seller refunded me straight away (as I did when item I sold didn't turn up at buyer's address). This seller seems to want me to wait until they contact the post office. She even said that she didn't know if they would do anything since she didn't send it recorded.

If you've had the envelope but the charm had fallen it, it's not likely to turn up now.
I would open a dispute now unless the seller has offered to send another one.
Did you ask the seller to refund or did you just message to say that it hadn't arrived?

I just emailed and explained that the envelope and note she'd written had turned up but that the envelope was damaged and there was unfortunately no charm inside. I didn't directly ask for a refund as I didn't want to seem pushy (daft on reflection) and I naively assumed that she would automatically offer it.

Not your problem, as it's jewellery I think it should have been special delivery.
I personally would message again & say that you aren't happy to wait for a RM claim & that you would like a full refund.
