We had talked seriously about this as we have so many animals that the insurance payments per month were quite high. Mercifully we did nothing about it as the next day our then kitten fell from a great height and landed on his face. The trip to the 24h vet cost a small fortune and then there were the costs for surgery and after care. It worked out as quite a saving having the insurance and as such we are keeping our policies going.

I cancelled the Pet Plan one I had for Daisy mainly due to them not covering her existing problems, she had cat flue as a kitten & that affected her breathing & she's prone to cough & sneezes at times,so it seemed like a good idea & my vet will let me pay by installments.
  • Zara's insurance is 31 per months and the 6 cats together around 60 so just over 90 per month for the lot of my furies.

Zara's xrays were around £600 in April, Argos (Platinum) finally paid up last weel (sigh of relief) which eans they did not try to put it under "pre exisiting" (she had problems with her front elbows when 1 yo but her srthritis and displasia are in her back legs but I was afraid Argos wil try to link it and get out of paying out - they did not)

There is a prospect of hip replacement and that is 2500 (more less) per hip so no way I would cancel Zara's insurance....

She is only 5, I hope she stays with me for much longer.....
  • It's weighing up pros & cons and deciding what's best for you & your pet....

Both my cats (3 and nearly 6) are insured which is about £12/month and both have a £65 excess. However, when the older one's renews later this year, this will also have a 20% of total bill added (as he's considered old:mad:). For me, with cat's it's a no-brainer - they go out and are unfortunately more likely to meet trouble in the form of accident, fight etc. My last cat also had kidney problems from the age of 3 and cost £000s so I just wouldn't risk it.

For the dog ... I was told he was 4 when I got him but couldn't prove this (and we always thought he had a couple of years on this) or any medical history and I was quoted upwards of £50/month with a £100 excess (and that was over 6 years ago).

I put money away into a pot and I've been (touch wood) very lucky - lots of tummy upsets (until I found out that he's wheat intolerant and a few more as he eats things outside) and the odd sore ear ... but all these have come in at either less or just over the excess so wouldn't have been able to claim. Dental work has been suggested (£250 - £400) but again, insurance wouldn't have covered this either..

He's now on arthritis medication but with a 6 month check-up, getting a prescription from the vet and buying online - this costs me less than £15 / month.

Again, he's really old now and I wouldn't put him through extensive treatment for a serious complaint so, for him, it's turned out fine but I'd still rather have been able to find affordable insurance when I got him...

I'd do as others suggest and have a search around and see if you can lower the premium. If you can, great - if not, have another think about it.

2 months after we cancelled at the age of ten our dog got diabetes..oh dear..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
