Anyone been through this?

Hi All

This time last year a man hit my car with his car and drove off from the scene.

I got his registration number and went to the police station to report him, phoned my insurance company to get my car fixed, then had to pay the £500 excess :(

The police got in touch a few months later and said there was nothing they could do.....so I put it all down to a bad experience and carried on with life (£500 poorer!!)

Recently the insurance company who I was with at the time have been getting in touch and have passed my case to a firm of solicitors to try and get my money back plus other costs (around £800)

Now as far as I am aware the guy denied the whole thing, even though he had insurance at the time. Confusing I know, but maybe he just didn't want to admit it. So how are they going to get my money back?

The solicitors have issued him with a court summons for the money and if he doesn't pay in 14 days then I'll have to go to court.

I'm quite scared/worried by the whole thing even though I've done nothing wrong. Has anyone been through this before? Any advice would be fantastic

No need to be worried (it will be an informal county court, not a formal magistrates court).

And it may not reach court if he owns up to his insurer!

And if you win you'll get your £500 back as well as be able to claim any other uninsured losses you experienced AND get any NCB you lost reinstated!
  • Strange, Did you witness the vehicle hit yours?

Long time ago now but i reported a hit and run driver, Car had been parked for a few days as i was cycling to work
spotted a small black scrape on the door. As i was looking at it a guy working on the roof next door shouted down
they have the reg number of the car that hit it.

Went to the police station and reported it, The copper on the desk said i had commited an offence because i had not
reported it within 24 hours. I think he wanted me to go away but i said how can i report something i did not know
about and insisted on reporting it.

I received a couple of letters saying they were looking into it. Then one day received a letter saying he had been taken
to court and fined for failing to stop etc. And they gave me his details and his insurance companies details.

When i phoned his insurance a few weeks later seems he had not notified them.

Yes, I was in the car when he hit me. We were driving round an island and he tried to change lanes without looking and went into the back of me. I pulled over and he drove off

The NBC reinstated would be fantastic! I had two years lost, and my insurance went through the roof when I had to get new insurance. It almost tripled :(

Or from A.N.Other's point of view, I was driving round the roundabout there was another car to my left, so they must have been leaving at the next exit as the driver had already passed one exit.....as we all know if they were intending on contiinuing around they would not be in the outside of the roundabout..... On taking my exit I expected the other car to also take I collided with her rear quarter.

50:50 insurance claim. Anyone on the outside of a roundablut having passed one exit must take extreme care if they intend to pass another exit.

But that depends on how many lanes enter the roundabout, the lane markings and the number of lanes on the exit roads....:)
