NCP ticket escalates to Soliciors letter - what now??!

Dear all
I have received a ticket from NCP for parking in a station carpark. Although I had a valid ticket I was ticketted for 'failure to park in a marked bay'. Admittedly I was parked on a piece of the carpark devoid of any parking bay BUT it was also devoid of any no parking signs/yellow lines.
I have ignored the letters from NCP but...have now had a debt collectors letter. I called them last week and said I was happy to proceed to court as I was parked in the same spot people have been parking in since 2007 without issue and the sign giving the list of offences is situated at the entrance of the station road which is impossible to read unless you park your car and walk over to read it (the road next to it has double yellow lines and I guess if I had a pair of high powered binoculars I could read it from the main road while waiting to turn into the station, while holding up all the main road traffic).
I was told the debt collectors needed a phone number in order to deal with me to which I replied 'poppycock' - you don't need a phone number and can correspond with me via post. I now wish I had given then the phone number of the local police station so they could irritate the staff there!
Truth is - where do I go from here? I spoke to a member of NCP staff, ticketting cars on a subsequent day and he confirmed that he had been told to start ticketting cars now and there had been a change of policy. This change has NOT been publicised in the carpark.
My gripe is that when I bought the ticket, there was no signs near the machine, nor dotted around the carpark listing the terms and conditions of NCP.
Any advice most gratefully received as I could do without the hassle following a family bereavement.
Thank you
