A MATB1 is medical proof of pregnancy. It is issued by a Midwife no earlier than 21 weeks of pregnancy and usually given at about 25 weeks. If your partner is due in Nov she should have one by now. Tell her to contact the Midwife and ask them.

OK, but what is its purpose, or what are its advantages (if any)?

You need it if you are eligible for Statutory Maternity Pay from your employer or to claim Maternity Allowance or if you cannot claim SMP or MA you need it to claim Employment Support Allowance on the basis of pregnancy.

In your position (partner on JSA) it would mean she could switch to another benefit at 29wks so she wouldn't have to sign on or look for work. Not sure what she would be entitled too after your job starts, maybe ESA?

We are in a joint JSA claim. She doesnt sign on (never has), just me.

If it simply means I dont have to sign on anymore than there isnt much point for me. However, if it means an increase in benefits then great.

You will still have to sign on as you are still looking for work. Wont be an increase in any benefits untill the baby is born

The form is just proof of when the baby is due and to send off if going to claim maternity pay or maternity allowance, as your partner isnt working neither of these apply
  • ok thanks!
