MBNA being evil..probably

Right, not sure if this should be here or not, I'm guessing so as it's closely following a PPI repayment of £3,000.
Last month, I successfully claimed £3000 back from MBNA and, seeing as I only had one payment left on my loan with them, I kept the money thinking I'd make my last payment to them in September. The other day, they sent me a letter saying that my last payment was due later this month and they would be taking my final payment of £3400! Quite a bit over the normal £300.
I phoned them and asked how they'd come to this and all they could say was that I'd changed the payment date (I moved it to a date nearer my payday - actually earlier in the month) and that I'd missed one payment (work had underpaid me so I spoke to them at the time and came to an agreement that I'd repay this missing installment over 4 months - which I did). So, I can stomach paying some late fees for those but there's no way they'd come to over 3k would they? They later back tracked and said it was actually £1700 I still owed them but they couldn't actually pinpoint what caused these charges. In the end, the lady said she would send me a full statement and I should call them back when I've received it.
Am I being paranoid or does it sound like they're trying to reclaim their PPI payment by hitting me with spurious charges?

Yes.
I'm having problems with them too, different ones, but it amounts to the same thing, they're offsetting the PPI they have to pay back with everything else they can up with. I'm also now waiting for paperwork from them to justify how they're calculating things. Don't give them an inch.0 -
Ah, good that someone else is having issues with them, it's not just me. To be fair, the girl at their end said she couldn't see anything obvious on my account and said it was a possibility that the PPI payment had messed the account up a bit so advised that I stop my direct debit and phone on the due date and pay by card (in her words "hopefully by then, this mess will have been resolved".).
What I did find disturbing was that the boy I spoke to before her said that they'd automatically extended my loan by 6 months so I could pay this money back. Can they even do that? I signed an agreement for 5 years, surely they can't just arbitrarily add an extra x months on to the end of it for some spurious payment that they can't explain.0 -
Was the ppi refund for this loan?.
If it was you need a breakdown showing the ppi taken off ,this should have reduced your balance anyway, and your monthly payment!!.
They cannot extend the loan by any more time, give FOS a ring and ask where you stand with this, the amount they want from you is extortionate.

Yes, the ppi refund was for this loan.
If memory serves, I removed the PPI at the end of 2009 (it would have been the same time as I did it with HSBC so although the exact date is fuzzy, it's definitely about then - I don't have the info to hand here at work). And as I say, the only problem I had with the loan was when work underpaid me and I had to skip a month which I subsequently paid back.
I guess I'll wait until I get the full statement from them which should arrive this week.0 -
This alters things then.GreenwichSi wrote: »Yes, the ppi refund was for this loan.

When you cancelled the ppi,the loan would have been redone without ppi, this would have caused an increase in apr and term.
Do you have the agreement or any paperwork that shows this new loan?.
This maybe why you owe them more than you thought with maybe extra interest, plus the missed payment interest,it should still not be over 3000 though.
Wait for the figures they are sending you and take it from there.0 -
OK, had a couple of chats with mbna while waiting for the statement to get to me. They're now saying that they closed the account and I'm actually £75 in CREDIT with them! I went through my bank statements from the month I got the loan from them and copy and pasted all payments to MBNA into another document for ease of reference in the future but now I'm thinking the best course of action is to just phone on the day the payment is due and see what they say. I do wish they'd been more specific with the PPI offer, saying if they'd written off the last payment (which it's now beginning to look like they've done!), it's very confusing.0
