Maximum amounts on debit cards?

I've paid £44k and £34k in individual debit card transactions before. The merchant will usually have to get you on the phone to your card issuer's authorisations department who ask you weird questions to verify your identity, totally unlike the questions you get asked as normal security questions.

When I made a card payment of similar value to the OP for a car, the dealer had to get the bank on the phone and I had to answer a couple of questions before it would go through.

OH paid 2k off his car loan with his debit card and it was all fine- i spoke to them on his behalf before he paid it to warn them and they said it wasnt necessary but better safe than sorry..
