quick PPI question

Hi guys,
been reading for a while but first time posting.
apologies if this has been asked/answered before but can i claim back my PPI if i haven't paid back the loan/credit card and the debt has been sold to a debt collector? I know I would have to claim it of the original company but wasn't sure if it was possible.
