Oven "pops" on heating and contacting

flyer

I have recently bought a Stoves double oven. When I put the top oven on it makes a bang when it gets hot and then does the same when it cools down. As I understand it , the cavity metal is contracting and expanding and the base actually bows upwards!
This is driving me mad, but Stoves insist it is OK. I've never come across this before, but we now have a stand off.
Any ideas?

I have a Belling double oven electric cooker which behaves in exactly the same way. It really does make a loud bang. ( both companies part of the Glen Dimplex group and probably quite similar in design and construction ).
I contacted Belling and complained about the thinness of the metal and poor build quality but got nowhere, their response was that they sell an awful lot of cookers and most people are very happy with them, suggesting that I was being over critical. I had further problems with the grill pan flexing and banging in the same way so they did replace that item.
having said that, after 8 months I dont think that the oven pops as much as it did when new, or maybe I'm just using the main oven more now.0 -
I don't think the fact that they sell a lot of cookers is a good enough excuse for selling shoddy cookers!
I am taking it up with the supplier!Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0 -
At first the supplier said they had never heard of this happening. However, when they got back to me after speaking to Stoves, they said Stoves were not prepared to budge as thin steel is "part of their specification"!!
The upshot is I have now written to the supplier and demanded a refund under the SOGA, as the oven is not of satisfactory quality.Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0 -
If you buy a cheap oven, you get cheap parts. It's as simple as that.
I'll be honest with you, going down the SOGA route is going to get you no-where. Just because you think it isn't of "satisfactory quality", it doesn't actually mean it isn't of "satisfactory quality" in the eyes of the law.
Ovens are made to different specifications, to suit different price points. One major difference will be the quality of the components. You wouldn't use the same spec'ed parts in a £500 Stoves oven as you would in a £1000 Neff double oven.
You get what you pay for...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Wow. Thank you for your most constructive comments.
At what point did I say how much I had spent? Would you hold the same views if I told you I actually paid £1100 for the oven?Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0 -

If you're telling me you paid £1100 for a Stoves double oven, I'm telling you that you have been MASSIVELY ripped off.
Most expensive double oven they sell is around £900. Majority of their double ovens are in the £450 to £550 price range...
And I think you'll find my comments are constructive, in relation to your willingness to go down the "SOGA" route...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

For your information.

It makes no difference what you paid for the oven...metal contracts/expands by physical definition. Even commercial ovens costing thousands will do the same which my wife has just confirmed. Metal oven trays do exactly the same thing too. If it bothers you turn the tv/radio up!
I hear what you are saying, but I have spoken to 6 friends who have bought new ovens over the last 12 months and not one has had this happen to them.
I also spoke to the retailer who had also never heard of it happening. I believe that, privately, the retailer is sympathetic but, sadly, is governed by what Stoves are prepared to do. In this case, nothing.Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0 -
As I said, you've been ripped off:
http://www.homegoods.co.uk/appliance/5358/Stoves/S7-E900MF%20Black.html
Over £100 cheaper.
And to be honest, for less money you could have got this, which is still touch control:
http://www.kitchenappliances123.co.uk/shop/pc/De-Dietrich-DOD798B-Built-in-Double-Oven-Black-p4827.htm
5 year warranty included.
Not that I'd recommend it though, if I was looking to spend that much on a double oven, I'd be looking here:

I still stand by my SOGA comments though...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Let's just accept we have different perceptions on ovens. I just took exception to your inference that I had paid next to nothing....Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.0
