Gloss paint disaster

WestonDave wrote:If you are gloss painting a door I'd recommend one of the gloss rollers (*) as they seem to give a better finish on a big area like that. They aren't expensive in places like Wilkinsons. Sand off the runs and give it a coat with the roller and I can almost guarantee no runs (unless you seriously overload the roller!).
* They are like a smaller version of the wall roller but are a firm foam rather than fluffy. Usually come as handle with removeable foam rollers - if you tie it in an air tight bag between coats it won't dry out by the next day so you can do the required number of coats and then bin the foam bit. Cleaning it out would probably be a nightmare!
Do you mean the 4 inch mini ( radiator ) rollers ? that's what I use on larger gloss jobs and as you say you get a much neater finish than anything you'll get from a brush and it's a lot faster too.
P.s. If you want to use the roller the next day without cleaning it just leave it in water ( I use an old plastic bottle cut in half ) to stop the paint drying out and then just shake the excess water off and roll a few times on old newspaper before using again.0 -
I would be concerned that any residual water would affect the gloss paint finish and that rolling it in newspaper might pick up black ink marks.Wayne3765 wrote:…If you want to use the roller the next day without cleaning it just leave it in water ( I use an old plastic bottle cut in half ) to stop the paint drying out and then just shake the excess water off and roll a few times on old newspaper before using again.
I would wipe off as much paint as possible, pour a very small amount of white spirit onto it and wrap it tightly in cling film or a plastic bag. Then just shake off any excess white spirit in the morning or dry it with a piece of kitchen roll.0 -

I've been using that method for years and never had a problem with water affecting the finish , the gloss paint stops the water from penetrating the roller or brush.
The tip was given to me by a professional painter & decorator who used to do it himself daily.0 -
I am a P&D and I use the rad roller on small jobs, and if you roll in newspaper it will pick up some of the ink, but, after a few rolls the ink will rub out.
It will drop water also, unless you soak up the water with thick kitchen roll doubled , and even then, the first couple of rolls on the door some water will run out, but again after a few rolls it disappears.
When I have loads of flush doors to paint, I use a rad roller and I leave it in water till I need it for the next coat,, it does it no harm to do this, as long as you get rid as much water as you can.
Even if you try and dry it on newspaper first, then do it again with kitchen roll, pressing quite firmly on the sleeve to get rid of as much excess water as you can.
It is so time saving painting with a roller, and if a door is rolled right, it can look just as good if not better than a brushed door.:D0
