I've got bulgar wheat in my cupboard that my dd bought and I don't know what to do with it. I nearly threw it out yesterday..what can I do with it?

You can cook it like cous cous - ie some boiling water poured over it and leave it to soak it up. If you want to make tabouleh, there are loads of easy recipes around - or it's nice with feta cheese and a couple of chopped up olives, and a spring onion or two mixed into it. Or eat it instead of rice with a curry.
  • The main things i keep in my cupboard are

    -pasta
    -beans
    -porridge
    -flour (plain and self raising)
    -stock cubes
    -spuds
    -rice

i tned to make alot of soup - im going to start growing some fresh herbs this year i think too - ive NEVER used herbs os i think i will have a go this year and see what i can add to what. - think it will liven up the cooking if anythign - provided the dog doesnt pee on them and kil them all!!! - oh i have hanging basket holders that go ove rmy fence and theres room for 6 pots in them (2 in each) so i think ill use them - they are at the end of the garden too so they'll catch the sun

ok peeps - ideas which herbs should i grow?? 6 max!!! (we are not parsley lovers in this house mind)

    Im thinking
    -chives
    -mint
    -rosemary
    then im lost!!!

Hi Taplady, If you think of all those bits n bobs you put away think 'oneday I'll use that' well this is it!! Today the frozen ministrone, 2 bits of salmon went into a kedgeree & we finally had ate some of the Christmas pud. After reading Tine's post I raided the garden & got handful of shriveled parsley but it cheered up the soup. I also have a mega bag of porridge so next week guess what's for breakfast? I soooo miss me glass of wine in the evening though. Even the poor cats are on Aldi dry cat food (but they are really liking it).

You've inspired me!:T will have to have a rummage through the cupboards to see what I can find!:D

Re Bulgar wheat, you can also add a couple of tablespoons to a stew or casserole to add a bit of bulk and make it stretch further.
Tabbouleh is a cold salad made from cooked Bulgar wheat, chopped salad veggies and dressed with mint. I think it's a Middle Eastern dish. It's nice :)

I make Bulgar Bake, it's lovely

soak the bulgar in 1/2 pt hot stock for about 20 minutes. Dice one onion and fry until soft, finely slice 1/4lb mushrooms, mix onion, mushroom and bulgar together with one beaten egg and one small carton natural yoghurt. Place in an ovenproof container and top with grated cheese and 1/2 tspn paprika. Bake at gas mark 5 for 20 - 30 mins until cheese is melted and starting to brown.

Dried soya mince..........great for veggie dishes, very cheap and also fantastic for adding to bolognase/chilli/shepherds pie to make the mince go further.
As well as the usual basics mentioned.
