Electricity Meter Glass smashed...help.

Our builder (bless him) broke the glass panel on the front of our leccy meter on Friday, while swinging some wood or something round in the garage (sorting out ceiling/joists to create storage above in pitched roof). Now, I've phoned British Gas to say what's happened, and at first they said, oh sure, we can arrange for a straight replacement, and then, when they tried to book it, after a long pause while I was put on hold, they said hang on, this can only be dealt with by a supervisor, we'll call you back. Does anyone have any idea if we will have to a) pay for the meter, and roughly how much? b) anything else about this scenario? The rights and wrongs and responsibility of it. We were due for a replacement meter anyway, to digital I think, but they haven't 'been in our area' for 18 months or so, so we were still waiting for that.

Thanks v much, Wendy :(

It looks as tho they are getting ready to investigate a possible fraud as smashed meters normally trigger alarm bells with them!

meter charge max is £67, but your builder would be liable
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    Maybe not - Accidents happen.

Normally straight replacement for a new meter though - Speaking from experience - Revenue protection only get involved if the bills are extremely low or someone hasn't been paying there bill for a while.

Why would they get involved if someone smashed the glass and phoned up to report it - That would defeat the object of trying to steal electric in the first place.

Why do you say that? They can bill you for two things; (1) Cost of sending the man out to do the job and (2) the remaining rental on the meter if it was not due to be changed for a number of years.

  • They should of booked the appointment straightaway on the call, however you should get a callback to arrange an appointment. Also you shouldn't be charged at all for the exchange.
