The thread by OAP about her outdoor trolley for carrying recycling boxes rusting very quickly made me think that this is another classic example of how councils have not thought through their recycling policies.

There are also many people who are not physically able to carry their filled recycling boxes to the designated pick-up points. Others have nowhere whatsoever to put them.

When my local council first rolled out the recycling scheme they gave people in selected areas black boxes to recycle glass and plastic. Looks a right mess if it's been windy and it goes everywhere. Thing is, since then they've delivered blue recycling bins to everyone but the black box households - so whilst they've been the 'pioneers' they're still stuck with those.

We have large green recycling boxes for papers, cans and glass. However, they are too bulky and heavy for me to lift now as my bump gets in the way, and I struggle pulling the wheely bin out, so hubby is on permanent bin duty now!

The green boxes have no lids and as the lorry comes round just after 7am, everyone put them out the night before. It looks awful after a windy night as there are papers and cans blown all over the street. Some neighbours and us have started putting things in carrier bags to stop this, but they keep complaining about that as it's more effort to open a carrier bag than reach into a box

Becles you must live really close to me beause we have exactly the same system. My recycle box blew away after it had been emptied on thursday and hasn't been seen since. I phoned the council to explain and ask for another one and they told me i would have to pay £15 for one. If I had phoned up and said it had been stolen I would have got a replacement for free

I'm under Chester le Street council.

Have you got a local councillor near by?

A neighbour is, and when my box vanished and I refused to pay for a replacement, the councillor managed to aquire 2 free ones for me ;)

not quite as close as I thought then lol we are under Durham city council.

My next door neighbour plays darts with our councillors wife, I might ask her to have a word on my behalf, I know that's how she got a new wheelie bin after her old one got a crack in it and the council refused to give her a new one. Great idea :D

Stoke on Trent council in its infinate wisdom gave us wheelie bins. Very nice of them, and did we not live in a 3 storey property with a large flight of steps to it then it would have been wonderful.....:/

We have green recycle boxes and black wheelie bins. Oh and white bags for paper. When they empty the green boxes the lads swing it and hopefully some of it reaches its destination if not its all in the back street. As for wheelie bins this past year I've had 3 stolen due to a skip in the middle of the road so the truck couldn't get down and the men had to pull all the bins to the bottom of the street to empty them, but they haven't got time to mess about putting them all back. The skip was there for 3 months due to being over filled so after many complaints from he council they collected it and emptied all the excess into the street and made a total mess so the council had to clear it all up so they could get the bin truck down the back street again.
