Hardboard walls

I have been stripping a room of wallpaper and in doing so found that one of the walls is covered in hardboard rather than plasterboard. Is hardboard a suitable material for walls - I'm thinking in terms of decorate-ability and fire proofing? I intend to give the room a skim of plaster before re-decorating also - will plaster take to hardboard?

Many thanks

Furn

Not sure that hardboard is commonly used in this way, which may point to some kind of bodge perhaps? That said, it is a 'building material'. I am no expert and others will probably be along later.

In my house I have at least one area where thick plywood was used by the builder in a bedroom (cupboard over the stairs). Which room are you talking about?

If the finish is not good enough to to just paint or paper then replace with PB I would not skim it as the skim is not designed to be used on it.
  • Bodge job sounds about right - in stripping wallpaper elsewhere I've found evidence of some poor workmanship, so wouldn't be surprised if hardboard was used purely because it was there! I'm minded to replace with PB as it's cheap enough - the current finish on the hardboard wouldn't be ideal as there are nail "holes" and the intention was to paint that particular wall.

    Hi there Furn,

Big question is what lies behind the hardboard . As has been suggested, maybe if the wall is 'sound' leave as is and PB over the top.

Good luck with whatever you opt for.
