We asked for toys in a variety of age ranges. The ones that were too big for him (age wise), I put away and gave them to him over a few months.

Money for savings. I explained to family members that it would go in his savings for his future.

Clothes in bigger sizes e.g. 9-12, 12-18. However, most people forgot you need to consider the season when it will fit the child. For example, I got given a tracksuit for DS, but it would have fitted him in August, meaning it would have been far too hot for him to get a decent wear out of it. So, tell people, 'Id like some 9-12 month clothes, but it will be summer, so please get him summery things like short-sleeved t-shirts'.

When buying presents for small babies, I often buy books - in particular the "board" books that kids can't destroy too easily. Even if they're too "old" for baby at the time of the gift they can be added to a growing library which can be firstly used for bed-time stories, and then can be used as early reading material when the child starts school.

I'd suggest either asking for vouchers (e.g. Mothercare etc) or older sized clothing, or a contribution towards something like a high-chair.

I would suggest toys and clothes that can come out over the next year when baby is ready for them.

Definitely books. Babies like looking at pictures in books from a few days old, and they'll last a while as you move from talking about the pictures, to story telling, to the child reading them him/herself. It's never too early to get them used to looking at books and they will learn skills that will last a lifetime.

My parents always get us the 'big' practical gift.

DD1's first christms 11 week old, highchair. My bday DD1 6 months old Maclaren pushchair. DD1's 1st bday October 2nd stage britax car seat.

There's been others but they were just the first year.

I agree about the seasons, if buying larger clothes. All the ones that didn't get used for DD! October bday got used with DD2 July bday though:p

These have all been wonderful and well used.

Luckily my little one asked for lots of nappies, bottles, milk and sleepsuits last christmas as he was just over a month old. This christmas he will get lots of toys as he's now old enough to play and learn. He loves water so i might get some kind of water tray or something.

At 3 months its better to get useful things or some nice clothes for them you can keep afterwards. One great one is always babys first christmas tree decorations or snow globes.

He did ask for some beer for daddy too but mummy crossed that off the list.
