Hurrican Irene Delay - Travel Insurance Cover?

Wondered whether anyone could offer any advice - We were in the US due to fly back from Miami to Manchester via JFK when Hurricane Irene hit New York thus shutting the airports and cancelling our flight home. American Airlines could not get us on another flight for a further 5 days from Miami but could fly us out of Orlando 3 days later via Gatwick. We obviously had various other expenses for the next 3 days including car hire to Orlando, Hotel Accommodation etc, Extra parking at the airport, etc etc. all due to a circumstance outwith our control!
Our insurance company (essential travel) have said the only thing we can claim for is "delay" which amounts to about £140 - the extra car parking alone was £90! Is the insurance company correct in their advice to me?
