Caring for Diamonds

I know, I'm very lucky - on Saturday night my lovely nana gave me a beautiful diamond ring. She's been saying since I was a little girl that it was mine in her will, but had decided to give it to me before she died as she never wore it any more and wanted to see me enjoying it, iyswim.
It's by far the most expensive thing I've ever been given but I am scared of it a bit. I know I have to get it added onto my insurance and will do that but reading bits on the internet, it's all take it off when you wash up, when you shower, when you go to bed, when you play sport. Do you all do that with your rings or do you just wear them all the time.
It's a lovely concern to have, and I'm not being boastful, I've no experience of diamonds you see :rotfl:

I never take my ring off to do any of these things, I guess the washing up and showering is not to get soap etc on it and the sport could be health and safety, but why not sleep wearing a ring?0

Me neither, I wear all my diamonds 24/7.
Traditional soap can leave a build up on the back of the diamond but a quick soak in washing up liquid or a brush with toothpaste soon removes it.
None of the things you have mentioned are going to damage the diamond but I would suggest, as it's such an old ring, is take it to a proper goldsmith (not high street jewellery shop) to get the setting checked incase it falls out.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I never take mine off, I would've lost it years ago if I did.:j little fire cracker born 5th November 2012 :j0

i take mine off if im in the house doing bits as i dont want to damage them as they are white gold and the more wear and tear they have the more often they need re-dipped.
defo agree with taking it to a jewllers to get it checked out and also get properly valued as that way if its lost/stolen then you will be able to replace it. it wont replace the sentiment however, but nothing is every going to replace that should the worst happen.0 -
Thanks, that reassuring. I'm so scatty if I was taking it on and off, I KNOW I would lose it. And will take it to proper jewellers - I will feel like I shouldnt be in there tho as Claires Accessories is more my sort of place !Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!0

I'm too scared to wear my engagement ring to work because I have quite a hands on care job and it's quite a high setting so I don't want to be poking people with it. Also I take it off when I go to bed because I have a habit of flailing my arms around and I'm scared of scratching myself with it! But other than that I wear it all the time. I have it insured with T H March and they have provided an excellent service so far.Emergency Fund - £8572.39 / £10,000 :: Mortgage OP 2025 - £LISA 24/25 - £3200 / £4000 :: NSD 2025 - 2 / 150 :: Books Read: 1 / 52 :: Decluttering - 4 / 1000Engaged 9th December 2010 :: Married 29th October 2015 :: Bought a House 13th January 20170

I have just counted and I have 19 diamonds on my hands at present.
The only time they come off is when I want to put tights on (so as not to snag!) and that is it.
Enjoy your ring :-)2 angels in heaven :A0 -
I rarely take my diamonds off.
Definately take it to a real jewellers.. get them to check it over and give you a full insurance valuation/appraisal. It will cost you a few quid, but worth every penny. You can insure it but without this it would be your word against the insurers if you ever needed to make a claim.

I never take mine off. A diamond is one of the strongest things on the planet. I'm more likely to harm someone with it by scratching them
I've scratched my other half by accident with it.
As it's old and special though, I would be careful.0
