Speaker recommendations please

I have recently bought a Samsung Smart television. On the whole it is a great television but the sound is appalling! 
I am now looking at external speakers but I am totally confused by what is on the market.
I dont want all singing all dancing cinema experience, just some speakers that I can have some control over the sound coming from them. I also dont want anything too in your face size wise! Some of them look like they would take up half the room. :rotfl:
Sub £100 if at all possible.
