Vmware training

Anybody taken any of the VMWare exams on here?

AFter working for 18 months in a company that has several VMware vSphere/ESX servers and picking up the basics - I want to start getting deeper into the technology and become aim to specialise in this area since it seems to be growing at a massive rate.

There are a couple of books I have spotteed which I will be buying and I also have a VMWare ESXi 5 host to play with at home.....

But I am also showing interest in going for the classes that are offered around various place. Downside is they cost a small fortune - 5 day course for £2600 + VAT, its quite an investment for a short amount of time. Has anybody been on one of these courses and are they worth it? I could see if the current place of work will help put some money towards the course since it will benefit them as well but I am still lookingat a decent wedge of money.

  • The thing with vmware is to be a recognised VCP you have to do the course. Just taking the exam without the course you will be in the limbo world of unofficial VCP so yes the course is worth it!

On the bright side as the course is for vSphere 4.1 and 5 has just been released you can currently take the 4.1 exam then the 5 exam without doing another course saving you another few thousand and you have until Feb 2012 to do this.

(You can't just do the vcp 5 exam with out the 4.1 exam as there is no official vcp 5 course yet)

I myself am currently in the process of studying for my VCP exams. I did the course and paid for it myself, it only cost £1200 inc exams and I could pay in 3 instalments so it is possible to do it for less than 2K.

I won't mention the company here as it could be construed as advertising but PM me if you want the name.

£1200 is a lot less than I have found (unless its a special "its next week" deal).

    PM on its way :)

You can mention the company as long as you don't own/work or have family/friends who ow/work there.

VMware is everywhere and people are starting to move everything towards virtualised environments and to the cloud with vSphere.

As for the training, I would say yes but as a disclaimer I work for VMWare's parent company :)
  • The cloud/virtualised servers is definitely growing and this will be good for job prospects - good luck with your course

in london the cheapest I have seen is a year ago was £1400.

A word of warning - make sure you go on a course that is approved by the VMware company, otherwise the course will not count towards your certification exam.
