Hi, recently sold two parrots that we've had for some years last Friday (9th) via Gumtree.

The buyer was sent photos, and we agreed to sell at £600 instead of £800. After a few emails, texts and phone calls, the buyer said he would pay cash if he was happy with the birds.

I received a text from the buyer yesterday saying that the birds were being fighting, and keep biting his fingers and wanted me to go and get them for a full refund or give him £200. I replied saying that any new pet needs more than a day to get used to their new environment.

As I've said, we've had the parrots for some years and have had no problems with them (we converted our outhouse into bird house to give them more room than to have them in cages).

So...am I right to refuse a refund on the basis that the buyer had seen the parrots and was happy with them when he brought them?

So the rehousing of your pets is of no importance to you?

Get yourself round there and now and give the guy his money back then find someone that knows how to handle them to take them on.
  • tell him to knob off, they're not fighting at all he just wants £200 back off you.

It's all well and good you playing that card..

But you don't know the reason behind the sale, their may be a legitimate reason for needing the money and it may have already been spent, so it may not be as simple as that!

Plus, just because the guy wants some money back doesn't mean the pet isn't going to be looked after!

I really don't care about the reasons for the sale the birds wellfare should be of paramount importance in this instance.

No his moral compass is just not pointing in the right direction if he trys this sort of nonsense.

And do you care to explain at what point it has been mentioned or even implied that the birds welfare is at risk? The guys looking for a quick buck, whether moral or not doesn't automatically mean the birds are in any danger.

I wonder if you would be saying that if op desperately needed the cash to pay the mortgage and keep a roof over his childrens heads..

I would be saying exactly the same thing, there are societies and organisations that would help him find a good home.

You have misguided priorities if you would put a pet before your own living family and children by allowing your whole family to go through the stress and upset of being rehoused because you used the last of your money to buy back pets than pay the rent/mortgage.

If op has concerns or reservations about the owners then it can be reported to the RSPCA. Although any concerns should have been address pre-sale.

Or the Salvation Army, St Johns Ambulance, Banardos or Scope for all the good it'll do.
