If I wanted to update from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Professional 32-bit do I use an upgrade disc, or will I need a clean installation of Windows 7 Professional 32-bit?
Thanks in advance...

I think you will need to do a clean installation. What baffles me is why you would want to 'downgrade' to a 32 bit system!0

I have to use my Laptop on my school network and with all the school software and have been advised that it needs to be 7 professional and if it is 64-bit it can cause problems...0

I don't think you can change from a 64bit install to 32bit install , or go in the other direction either!
I could be wrong of course ... but I would say a re-install is the only way.0 -
You can install 32 bit Home Premium and still use the product code. Must admit that I can't fathom out why the school's software can't work on a 64 bit system. Maybe others can enlighten you here.0

Does your laptop have 4GB or more of ram? if so you won't be able to use more than 3 if you use 32 bit OS.
What is the reason that you use home premium?0 -
Hey dude,
In any case when going from 64-bit to 32-bit you will need to do a fresh install - meaning letting the disc delete everything on your hard drive and reinstall it. If your laptop has more than 4GB RAM (memory) though you'll be losing out, as only 64-bit can handle more. It'll work, but any excess will be wasted.

Thanks for all the info
I'm now trying to get to the bottom of whether the school system / software will have issues with 64-bit (what I have been told).
I've downloaded Windows 7 upgrade advisor from Microsoft to see whether it has issues with hardware / software... I will use it tomorrow, will it look at any compatibilty issues with our school server?0 -

Your school are talking rubbish. I'd like to say it comes as a surprise.0 -
Hmm, if the Networked printers are old / don't have 64 bit drivers, and the whole network is 32 bit, then jumping onto it with a 64 bit laptop is going to cause trouble. Can't seen any issues over software though, just the hardware, and even then it's a long shot.0

If the OP upgrades ro win 7/64 pro , he can download XP Mode and run the laptop at school as XP - and full Win 7/64 at home. Suggest the OP checks that his school network would work - suspect it would be fine.
Upgrading to Pro does not require a full re-install - plus this upgrade can be bought for £70 from Amazon, maybe cheaper as the OP is a teacher.
Worth investigating........0
