Ideas what to use to fill garden ditch on the cheap!!

I was thinking of buying cheap bricks fill the ditch and then top up with compost. You can buy hardcore from some companies but they sell by the ton and I do not know how much that it is and how much I would need to buy? Ideally if I could source some coarse soil but do not know where to get it from. The ditch is about 8 mts long, 4 mts wide and about 1mt deep, these measurements are approx. Also would prefer them in bags so that it can be manageable as access is not easy. The ditch could be filled with coarse soil as will not probably use it as it is right in the back garden. The cheapest materials I could use to fill it will be better, any suggestions or advice from anybody will be appreciated. Ideally it will be easier if I could buybag of compost and fill it in slowly week by week. Cannot do heavy gardening due to health problems. Thanks

gosh, you should be able to get hardcore for free easily! Advertise on freecycle or anywhere. People always want to get rid of hardcore

Just a thought, there's usually a good reason someone has created a ditch.
  • Check with council that you are allowed to fill the ditch. That's a pretty substantial hole and you may need planning consent to say the least.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Oh yes, I would really make sure I knew why it was there before I started filling it in.
  • 8m x 4m x 1m = 32m3. Builders merchants usually sell stuff in m3 bags, so you'd need 32 of them to fill your ditch!! Have you thoughts about blocking off the ends of it, lining it if it's dry and creating a pond out of it instead? It'll get filled with lots of lovely free rainwater and could attract all sorts of wildlife.

Obviously definitely get permission to do it first if you must do it, it could be a very important drainage ditch...
