scrap prices are high so lots of rubbish left over from the scrappage scheme is going in the big pot to china
mot.s are tough to pass on rubbish
so $500 buys rubbish that scraped through with a limp
    $1000 is better
everyone is downgrading to smaller efficient cars
you need to be alert to not buy a pig in a poke at this end of the market
  • My own £400 Astra F diesel had a good MOT when I bought it and runs on veg oil or as winter comes in, a veg oil and petrol or diesel mix. (veg oil straight off the shelf can be had for £1 a litre if you shop around)

Ok, £230 tax, but thats only around a fiver a week.

You could possibly get a 1.5 diesel Corsa B that would be cheaper to tax.

Buy on the strength of MOT, I was willing to go £50 per month left.

All cars registered from 1st March 2001 are subject to road tax based on their emissions. This site here will give a list of cars and what tax band they fall in:-

I second the Astra. Paid £500 for mine 2.5 years ago and I also run it on veg in the warmer months so only pay for fuel Oct-April.
Alternativly look at mitsubishi. £650 will get you a lot of reliable car.
